Selkirk 'A' 32, Kirkcaldy 2nds 7

Selkirk youngsters growing in stature

LIKE their club's 1st XV, the Kirkcaldy second string currently find themselves at the wrong end of the league. However, the Fifers put up a battling display in Saturday's Scottish 2nd XV League Division Three fixture, and despite the size of the scoreline pushed the home side every inch of the way.

To their credit, the young Selkirk players put up an equally determined performance, and it was the superior finishing power of the home threequarters which eventually saw the Souters register their third consecutive league victory.

No-one did more for the home cause than scrum-half Michael McVie. Later named Selkirk's 'Man of the Match', he scored two of his side's four tries and marshalled his backs to telling effect. For the second Saturday in a row that evergreen threequarter Michael Jaffray also got amongst the tries, notching a brace to add to his hat-trick last time out.

Special mention must also go to teenage flanker Greg Hancock, who made an immediate impact when coming off the replacements' bench. His sniping runs and intelligent support play helped Selkirk keep the pressure on the Fifers, with fellow back row man David Gray also having a productive afternoon after missing last week's game because of a groin strain.

The rest of Selkirk's points came from the boot of Gary Lyall, whose tally of three conversions and a penalty takes his personal haul for the season to 63.
