Selkirk 'A' 14, RHC 12

Selkirk 'A' have drop on RHC 2nds

A PENALTY in injury time by Royal High-Corstorphine's Malcolm Cant - his fourth in the game - appeared to have consigned Selkirk 'A' to defeat in Saturday's Division Three match.

However, with only seconds to go on referee Norman Jackson's watch, evergreen Selkirk threequarter David Anderson silenced the visitors' touchline celebrations by calmly dropping a goal to ensure the Scottish 2nd XV League points stayed at Philiphaugh.

The winning kick left home coach Brian Cassidy, for once, speechless. "After RHC got that late penalty I thought we'd been beaten, and I was preparing what to say to the boys in the dressing room after the game. The next thing I knew David had landed a drop-goal as cool as you like, and suddenly it was the turn of our supporters to start cheering!"

What made Selkirk's win even sweeter was the fact Cassidy had been forced to persuade several players - 40-year-old David Anderson included - out of retiral to compensate for so many 'A' XV regulars being drafted into the club's injury-hit senior side.

Darren Hulme gave a typically dogged display in the unfamiliar role of scrum-half, while the officially retired Duncan Lawson also pulled on his boots for the cause.

As the only 'A' team player to have appeared in every game this season, the captaincy was handed to 18-year-old wing Greg Fairbairn, with ex-1st XV skipper Cammy Cochrane on hand to help out with the decision-making.

RHC's stuffy pack kept the home eight on their toes, and the visitors led 9-6 early in the second half - Cant's three penalties being answered by two from Steven Renwick.

Skipper Fairbairn scored a try to snatch back the lead, only for Cant's late penalty to restore RHC's two-point advantage. Then came Anderson's dramatic drop-goal, which keeps Selkirk's promotion hopes alive.
