ON one of the stormiest nights of the year, a young Selkirk 'A' side showed its mettle by securing a hard-fought victory over Peebles 2nds at Philiphaugh.

Friday's match was a rearranged Border Farm Supplies Border Championship fixture, and what made the victory even more notable was the presence of a handful of Selkirk Youth Club players in the home team. Particularly impressive were starting half-backs Fraser Tough and Darren Scott, both just 17 years of age, who showed good understanding and touches of genuine class throughout.

Playing with the gale-force wind at their backs, Selkirk took the lead through a Darren Scott penalty, and stretched further ahead midway through the half thanks to a try from number eight Callum Johnston.

Down by just eight points at the break, Peebles must have fancied their chances of overhauling the home side with the elements behind them in the second half. However, the entire Selkirk team dug in and put on a tremendous defensive display, increasing their lead when replacement scrum-half Fraser Jack picked up at the base of a ruck and nipped over for a clever try to go 13-0 ahead..

Selkirk's rock-solid defence held out until the final minute of the game, when ex-Philiphaugh player Bruce Anderson stole over for a try, converted by Keith Nisbet. This came too late to affect the outcome, and the Selkirk players were understandably jubilant at the final whistle to have pulled off such a gutsy win.

"The players really showed what they were made of tonight," said Selkirk coach Cameron Cochrane after the game, "and I thought our defence in the second half was outstanding. The Youth Club players all pulled their weight, and the effort of the whole team in very difficult conditions augurs well for the future."
