SELKIRK clinched the Reserve League East 1 title at Philiphaugh on Saturday with a convincing 69-0 victory over RHC 2nds. Having finished runners-up in the Borders District League for the past two years, the Souters made it third time lucky, scoring 11 tries in a five-star display.
Man of the match Guy Blair had more reason than most to celebrate, the 32-year-old former 1st XV captain crossing for four tries during the afternoon - setting a benchmark his team-mates were only too happy to follow.
The importance of Saturday's fixture created some early signs of nerves amongst the home player. In the fifth minute Sean Nixon had a score ruled out when he was adjudged to have lost control of the ball when diving over the try line in the Nissen Hut corner.
However, the all-important breakthrough came soon afterwards when Blair crossed for the first of his quartet of tries in the opposite corner, quickly followed by a try from veteran prop Martin Murray after a mazy run by Craig MacDougall saw the powerful centre side-step past five defenders.
A second try by Blair, converted by Rory Banks, stretched Selkirk's lead to 17-0, and on the half-hour mark skipper Jason Hendrie scored the clinching bonus point try. Two further scores by Fraser Jack and Blair put Selkirk 36-0 ahead at halftime.
A runaway score from 40 metres out by Steven Renwick set the tone for a one-sided second half, with Selkirk's other tries coming from Blair, David Gray, Ewan MacDougall and Chris Shand. Banks kicked five conversions and Darren Scott two.
Selkirk now enter the Reserve League play-offs along with four other regional league winners, with promotion to Reserve National Two the prize awaiting the winners. Their play-off opponents have just been named as Howe of Fife, with the game scheduled to be played on a neutral ground this Saturday.
