STORMERSí FIGHTING SPIRIT NOT ENOUGH AGAINST SLICK JED-FOREST SIDE

SELKIRK Stormers travelled to take on Jed-Forest 2nds in a Borders Cup tie on Saturday. It was only the teamís second match of 2012, and despite a couple of late call-offs, Stormers were able to field a full side against a well-drilled Jed team.

The visitors took the field with experience in the shape of team manager Donny Mackenzie as well as Derek McFadzen Ė back from injury and playing in an unfamiliar role at scrum half.
Jed pushed hard right from the start and scored after eight minutes. However the Stormers started to get back into the game, and with good leadership from Calvin Henderson started to use short drives from rucks to put Jed on the back foot.
With some strong runs from Kieran Reid and Mackenzie, Stormers pushed for their first points but Jedís defence held firm and the danger was cleared. Jed then went 14-0 ahead, but some great tackling by Daniel Pringle and Gary Lyall stopped the floodgates from opening.

Just before halftime Jed opted for a scrum rather than a penalty, made sure the visitorsí back row were tied in and a simple overlap made it 21-0 at half time
At halftime coach Neill Wood praised the team for the way they had stuck in and asked for extra effort in the second half with the wind at their backs. The Stormers responded and for the first 10 minutes pushed hard inside Jedís 22.
Chris Fairbairn and Jimmy Stevens hammered the Jed line without reward, then Derek McFadzen thought he had scored but the referee ruled the ball had been held up.
Fifteen minutes into the second half hooker Scott Rodgerson sustained a cut eye and had to leave the field, being replaced by Neill Wood. Gary Lyall then put in the tackle of the day to save a certain try.
Despite never letting their heads go down, short-handed Stormers found it hard to contain a lively Jed team, with three more home tries seeing the Royal Blues home and dry.

Coach Neill Wood was pleased with the commitment shown by all the players, with special mentions going to Calvin Henderson, Gary Lyall, Bob Wilkinson, and Rob and Richard Cook.
