TRY BLITZ BY STIRLING COUNTY IN FIRST HALF PUTS PAID TO SELKIRK A's VICTORY HOPES

Kieran Monks -hat-trick of tries only bright spot for Selkirk.

SATURDAY'S RBS Reserve League National 1 match between Selkirk 'A' and Stirling County 2nds at Philiphaugh was over as a contest as early as the 39th minute, by which time the visitors had exploited some weak defending by the home team to score five tries, four of which were converted.
This defeat leaves Selkirk 10 points adrift of third-bottom Edinburgh Accies at the foot of the table, desperately needing a sequence of victories to pull them clear of the relegation zone.
With Stirling County 36-14 ahead at halftime, damage limitation was Selkirk's only option after the break. To the home players' credit, they did manage to edge the second half 14-12, although this was of little consolation to the home coaches.
A try-scoring bonus point was Selkirk's only reward for a long afternoon in the trenches, wing Kieran Monks bagging a hat-trick of tries and Sean Nixon crossing for one. Replacement David Cassidy kicked three conversions and Scott Bell one.
Selkirk's back row of Matt Robertson, Sean Nixon and John Everitt battled gamely throughout the contest, while Craig MacDougall also showed up well in midfield and Ali Lyall proved a calming presence when coming off the bench.
Next week Selkirk 'A' make the short journey to The Greenyards to take on Melrose Storm, where a much more consistent and committed display will be needed to get the team's National 1 show back on the road.
