Selkirk ‘A’ 19, Glasgow Hawks 2nds 35

A POWERFUL Glasgow Hawks 2nds team showed why they are currently sitting on top of RBS Reserve League National 1 with a typically solid display against Selkirk ‘A’ at Philiphau8gh on Saturday .

However, the visitors met stiff resistance from the home side, who battled hard throughout the 80 minutes and could have taken more from the contest but for a couple of errors in the second half which resulted in tries for Hawks.

It was the Souters who put the first points on the board thanks to a Michael Rutherford penalty, but two converted tries by Hawks saw the momentum swing back the visitors’ way. However, a brace of penalties from the boot of Rory Banks - the second from the halfway line – put Selkirk right back in the hunt. Halftime score: Selkirk ‘A’ 9, Glasgow Hawks 2nds 14.

At this point Selkirk lost the services of fly-half Michael Rutherford, who aggravated an injury picked up in the recent match against Stewart’s/Melville FP, his place being taken by Jason Hendrie. Lock Eddie Turner was replaced by Callum Marshall at the same time.

Selkirk narrowed the gap thanks to a smartly taken drop-goal from Rory Banks in the 55th minute, but Hawks stretched their lead with two converted tries in the final quarter of the match.

A minute from time Calum McEwan scored a brilliant try following good lead-up work by the hard-working home pack, but the city team had the final say with their fifth try two minutes into injury time.
