NEWCOMERS LEAD THE WAY ONCE MORE
AS SELKIRK ‘A’ WIN ON THE ROAD AT HAWICK
SELKIRK ‘A’ came out on top in Saturday’s pre-season training match at Wilton Park - narrowly edging past a powerful
Hawick Harlequins side by 12 points to seven.
The home team started more convincingly, however, and on the 10-minute mark scored a converted try through their
pacy winger. This score came after Selkirk had taken play deep into ‘Quins 22, but when the move broke down the
Hawick players were quick to punish the young Selkirk side’s mistake.
Saturday’s contest was played in three half-hour sections, and the scoreline was 7-0 in ‘Quins’ favour right up
until the third section of the game. Some good inter-play between the visiting backs and forwards saw Selkirk’s
strong-running centre Andrew Given score an unconverted try to put the Philiphaugh men right back in contention.
In the closing minutes a fine touchline break by Josh Welsh led to a try by replacement Tom Walling, which Welsh
converted to seal another victory for the visitors.
Once again all the new players in the Selkirk team stepped up to the mark, so keeping up the pressure on the rest
of the squad ahead of this Saturday’s opening league fixture at Philiphaugh against Aberdeen 2nds.
