Heriot’s FP 2nds 34, Selkirk ‘A’ 5

NO SILVER LINING FOR ‘A’ XV AT GOLDENACRE, AS HOT HERIOT’S FP CALL THE SHOTS

Man of the match: Michael Waldron

DESPITE putting up stiff resistance to a bigger and more physical Heriot’s 2nd XV throughout Saturday’s RBS Reserve League National 1 game at Goldenacre, Selkirk ‘A’ passed the point of no return early in the second half when two home tries in the space of 10 minutes put the result beyond doubt.

Trailing 10-0 at halftime, the visitors were forced on to the defensive for long periods of the match, but showed commendable spirit in their first-time tackling and refusal to let the floodgates open. Scrum-half Michael McVie led by example in this regard, with fellow backs Andrew Given and Jason Hendrie also showing up well, while full-back Josh Welsh’s booming line kicks helped keep the city side at bay.

The only reward for all this effort by Selkirk’s players came midway through the second half, when Michael Waldron powered his way over the line for the visitors’ only try of the afternoon. The prop forward had a particularly good game, and was later named Selkirk’s ‘man of the match’ by the team’s coaches.

Although Selkirk’s 1st XV does not have a fixture this weekend, Selkirk ‘A’ will travel to Poynder Park on Saturday for a Border League Cup fixture against Kelso 2nds.
