DESPITE going down to Dundee Titans in Saturday’s BT Reserve League National 2 fixture at Mayfield, Selkirk A’s players were able to take a lot of positives from a contest that whose result hung in the balance right until the final minutes of the match.

In particular the Selkirk pack showed great character against bigger and more powerful opposition. Despite enduring a tough time in the set piece, the visiting eight more than made up for this in open play with secure handling and resolute defence.

After the match Selkirk ‘A’ coach Fraser Jack had nothing but praise for his young charges: “We were always in this game, and could have pinched it if the boys had been able to turn some strong pressure into points around the 70-minute mark.

“In fact but for a couple of lapses in concentration in the final minutes of the match, Selkirk could have had taken all five points if we had managed to score a fourth try.”
Fraser added that while he and forwards coach Graham Marshall were naturally disappointed the side ultimately hadn’t managed to come away with even a losing bonus point, they both felt the commitment of the whole Selkirk squad over the 80 minutes had been second to none.

Trailing 10-7 at halftime, Selkirk’s first half points came from a try by Callum McEwan converted by Jack Elliot. After the break the visitors scored another try through Callum McEwan, converted by Jack Elliot, while Ali Lyall celebrated his return after injury by scoring the Souters’ third try.

Selkirk made several substitutions during the match Ali Lyall replacing Willie McClymont (30 mins), Craig Bruce replacing Lewis Martin (halftime), McClymont replacing Kieran Thomson (52 mins) and Andrew Scott coming on for Jason Hendrie (57 mins). Selkirk’s ‘man of the match’ was Robert Cook.
