DESPITE making a bright start, which saw Selkirk
winger Frazer Anderson come close to scoring in the opening minutes, the gap between these two sides widened as
Saturday’s Borders Cup tie wore on.
Gala’s bigger, more physical pack were always going to pose problems for the visitors, and although Selkirk’s players
put up stout resistance, the unrelenting pressure exerted by the Maroons ultimately proved too intense to contain.
A break up the left touchline by Gala winger Michael Dodds in the 10th minute saw skipper Robert Cook and team-mate
Kerr Gerrard combine to keep the visitors’ try line intact, while some well-judged line kicks by Rory Hamilton
helped keep the home team at bay.
In the 36th minute Selkirk suffered a blow when scrum-half Ryan Legge had to rertire to the touchline after sustaining
a head knock. Lewis Martin came on as replacement, with Frazer Anderson taking over behind the scrum. Halftime
arrived with Gala 17-0 ahead.
Anderson himself had to be replaced soon after the break after picking up an injury, resulting in replacement Willie
McClymont being drafted into the back row and Ross Purves switching to scrum-half.
As the visitors understandably began to tire in the face of Gala’s unremitting attacks, tries began to be conceded
by the visitors at regular intervals - the home side eventually notching 10 in total to emerge convincing winners.
Try scorers for Gala were Fraser Welsh (3), Gregor Mein (2), Rex Jeffrey (2), Terry Skeet, Andrew Mitchell and
Richard Tod. Fly-half Simon Fairburn added six conversions.
Gala 2nds will take on BT Reserve League National 1 leaders Melrose Storm in the next round.
