Edinburgh Accies 2nds 62, selkirk 'A' 6

The Selkirk A team got their league campaign underway on Saturday, traveling to opulent Stockbridge to take on Edinburgh Accies, full of confidence for the coming season. That confidence however, was rattled somewhat by the obvious gulf between the 2 teams. The prem 1 side’s second string demonstrating the benefits of having the elite premiership status and the quality of player it encourages to their club.

It was a very hard day at the office for Sekirk’s young guns with Accies running in no less than 6 tries in the first half and a further 4 in the second. Adding conversions, the Capital side amassed a grand total of 62 points against Selkirk’s two first half Cassidy penalties. The game ending 62 points to 6. There were some positives to draw on however, Selkirk showing some glimmers of what may be possible against lesser opponents, Rookies Liam Davidson and name sake Andrew (Rocky) Davidson showing definite promise.
Pulling the team together after the game, it was great to see that words of wisdom surrounding the defeat from coaches Hendrie and McGowan did not fall on deaf ears. A young crew, peppered with newcomers being introduced to senior rugby from the Youth Club ranks were not disheartened. They were quick to appreciate that this would probably be their hardest game of the season, and put the day down to experience. The squad then went on to celebrate Matty Francis’s birthday with a “yard of ale”at Raeburn Place followed on by a teambuilding pit stop at Pathead, pride slightly dented but camaraderie and team spirit in abundance…

Bring on the rest of the season!
