YOUNG SELKIRK ‘A’ PLAYERS FIND
GOING TOUGH AGAINST FREE-SCORING MUSSELBURGH 2nds TEAM
MUSSELBURGH 2nds 47, SELKIRK ‘A’

IN blustery conditions on the school pitches at
Pinkie Park, the Honest Lads scored four first half tries to build up a lead the young Souter team never looked
likely to match in Saturday’s Tennent’s East Reserve league Division 1 fixture.
The home team opened the scoring when second row Gary Neill emerged from a pile of bodies to score an unconverted
try, but Selkirk hit back immediately with a well struck penalty from the boot of Scott Clark.
Neill then touched down again before both wingers, Darren Carter and Tom Foley, scored a try apiece, with Foley
adding the extras to make the halftime score 26-3.
Selkirk’s cause wasn’t helped in the second half with injuries to Matthew Francis (ankle), Sam Cockburn (head knock)
and Adam Nichol (ankle), all of whom had to be helped from the field.
After the break Musselburgh never took their foot off the pedal and increased their lead with further tries from
Foley and Rory Smith, with Foley adding the conversions for an unassailable lead of 40-3.
With more forced substitutions having to be made by the visitors, Selkirk’s play may have become disjointed, but
their attitude never wavered. Some searing runs by Callum Turnbull and Declan Broatch paved the way for hooker
Ross McFadzen to power his way over the line for a well-deserved try.
On the final whistle Musselburgh’s replacement prop Donald Grant touched down between the sticks to make the final
score 47-8.
The result leaves Selkirk ‘A’ still looking for their first away victory, but they can take heart from solid performances
by centre Lewis Martin and the ever-reliable Ruaraidh MacKessack-Leitch and Callum Turnbull.
Meanwhile scrum-half Liam Davidson well deserved his ‘Selkirk man of the match’ award following a five-star performance
throughout the 80 minutes.
