Gutsy Selkirk A players keep their nerve to pip Jed

Jed-Forest A 17, Selkirk A 20

IN a bruising Borders District Cup tie at Riverside Park on Friday night, which saw three players taken to the Borders General Hospital, Selkirk A just managed to hold off the challenge of a spirited Jed team.
It was the visitors who set the early pace, with Michael Jaffray scoring close to the posts after a scorching break by Alistair Lyall. Fly-half Michael Rutherford kicked the conversion, before putting Selkirk 10-0 ahead from a penalty shortly afterwards.
This was the signal for the Royal Blues to turn up the heat, and after a spell of sustained pressure on the visitors’ line, Michael Graham and Jamie McCraw crossed for tries, both converted by Gary Hughes, putting Jed 14-10 ahead.
A second Rutherford penalty cut the deficit, before Selkirk number eight Ryan Crockatt had to be led from the field after sustaining a neck injury, his place being taken by Scott McKenzie. Three minutes later Selkirk suffered another setback when lock Neil Purves hurt his shoulder and was replaced by Andy Bell.
The game remained finely balanced, with Jed extending their lead through a Hughes penalty. Selkirk then lost another player (flanker Jim Ross) with a badly cut head, but just as the game seemed to be slipping away from them the Souters hit back with a dramatic late try to clinch the match.
Visiting skipper Bryan Hoggan found himself in space wide out, and after selling an outrageous dummy flipped the ball back over his head to the supporting Dave Lithgow, and the prop needed no second invitation to dive over near the corner. Rutherford’s touchline conversion flew over, securing a hard-fought victory for the young Selkirk team.
Crockatt’s injury was diagnosed as torn neck ligaments, and the teenager is expected to be out of action for at least three weeks. Jim Ross needed six stitches in his head wound, and will be sidelined for a fortnight.
The third player requiring treatment at the BGH was Jed-Forest’s Ian Hedley, whose arm is now in a sling after he suffered an elbow dislocation.
