Selkirk 2nd XV 24 Berwick 2nd XV 28
|Gary Guthrie scored a try for Selkirk in the corner
in the fourth minute in a well executed move by the backs. Guthrie used his thundering pace to go over for the
unconverted try. Selkirk were still in the ascendancy and won ball from a line-out on the Berwick "22"
for Alan Jamieson to jink his way over. Mark Easson added the conversion to put Selkirk 12 points to nil in front.
After a plethora of penalty attempts Berwick finally got points on the board a few minutes later then having found the way they added another. That seemed to spur them on and the Northumbrians added a try and conversion to make it 12-13 at half time.
The visitors were first to add points to the board on the restart and another penalty saw them pull further ahead before Alan Jamieson made a break for Selkirk with the ball and with Gary Guthrie up in support. Gary was sent in to touch down and pull the game back to 17-16 in Selkirk's favour.
Not for long though and minutes later Berwick answered with their own try. It was still anyone's game but Berwick took the initiative first and added another class try between the posts to give their kicker the easiest of conversions.
Selkirk weren't quite finished yet and before the end, after putting Berwick under tremendous pressure Neil Brown went over to get his name in the score book. Easson added the conversion to make it 24-28. The Souters tried to get another but were denied by the Berwick defence and the stop-watch.
The Selkirk manager Douglas Gunn had this to say at the final whistle, "This was Selkirk 2nds first real outing of the season and we have a lot of new faces in the side. Although they didn't win this was a great performance.
"Yes, there are a few technical hitches to be ironed out but we will improve and we will get it right."
