RAINY DAY BLUES
FOR SELKIRK ‘A’ PLAYERS, AS HIGH-FLYING BIGGAR 2nds MAKE MOST OF THE ELEMENTS

ON a day more suited for ducks, Selkirk
‘A’ travelled to Hartree Mill on Saturday to take on Biggar 2nds. In monsoon conditions the young Souters suffered
a heavy 38-3 defeat at the hands of a well-drilled Biggar outfit.
Handling became an issue for both sides, with knock-ons a feature of the game. However, it was Biggar who drew
first blood with winger Jamie Bell scampering over for an unconverted try.
The visitors hit back in the 15th minute when, after a series of pick-and-drives, Biggar were caught offside and
David Cassidy slotted the 30-yard penalty to make the score 5-3.
A steady flow of line-out ball provided by the Selkirk pack, with Jamie Turnbull and Matthew Francis working hard,
had the home side needing to keep their wits about them, but the Philiphaugh team were unable to cross the home
try line and the score remained 5-3 at halftime.
With conditions improving after the break, further tries by second row Jamie Tucker and a brace by flanker David
McGiven kept the score ticking over. Biggar’s kicking machine, scrum-half Euan Bogle, then took his try tally to
two as well as adding four conversions.
David Cassidy kept the home team pinned back with some accurate kicking from hand, but the boys in blue couldn’t
cross the whitewash.
Forwards coach Martin Murray was naturally disappointed after the game: “To lose six tries in the manner we did
was frustrating, as the errors were avoidable. All credit to Biggar though, whose defending was outstanding throughout
the 80 minutes.”
Special mention must go to Lewis Hislop and Lawry Edwards, both making their debut in a Selkirk jersey.
