LAST-GASP TRY SEES SELKIRK ‘A’
FIND A SILVER LINING IN HARD-FOUGHT INVERLEITH CONTEST
STEWART’S MELVILLE 2nds 42, SELKIRK
WITH ex-Scotland & British Lion captain Finlay
Calder cheering on the home team from the touchline, Stewart’s Melville 2nds went on to win a tight contest at
Inverleith on Saturday against a plucky Selkirk ’A’ side.
The visitors went ahead in the fourth minute from a Sam Cockburn penalty, and after Euan Bowen replied in kind,
tries by Fergus Robertson and Euan Povey put Stewart’s Melville in the driving seat.
Pressed into service because of front row difficulties, Selkirk coach Martin Murray spun and shrugged off a tackle
to touch down in the 38th minute, Cockburn converting to make the halftime score 15-10 to the hosts.
After the break a Connor Lane try increased the home side’s lead, but soon afterwards replacement Ben Purves beat
his man to score in the corner and cut the deficit to 22-15.
However, a catalogue of errors resulted in another try for Lane, followed by one by Stewart Hagart. The visitors
hit back when great work by Adam Nichol and Declan Broatch ended with skipper Liam Cassidy crossing for a try,
converted by brother David.
Bowen kicked a further two penalties to stretch the home lead to 42-24, but with only seconds remaining a great
spell of attacking rugby ended with Andrew Cochrane scoring his first try for the club (converted by Cockburn)
to earn Selkirk a bonus point.
“A disappointing afternoon, but credit to the boys for coming away with a bonus point,” said team manager Bryan
Hoggan. “We never give up, and that was shown today with Selkirk battling hard right up to the final whistle.”
